Jim has spent the past 18 years managing and helping turn around troubled companies. In 1995 he became one of the first 50 professionals to receive the respected Certified Turnaround Professional designation. Prior to entering the turnaround field in 1990, Jim spent 18 years in a variety of financial positions in the transportation, leasing and investment banking industries.
His turnaround consulting experience includes advising, developing and implementing operational and financial restructuring plans for numerous companies including manufacturers of off-road equipment, commercial lawn mowers, modular housing and telecommunications buildings. He also advised on the turnaround of an international IP consulting firm and of a four-year college. Between 1998 and 2001 Jim interrupted his consulting career to serve as Assistant to the CEO of a publicly-traded bank holding company where he handled acquisitions, corporate governance and shareholder communications.
Jim’s diverse experience and background allow him to work closely with and negotiate with insolvency attorneys, trade vendors, lender workout departments, equity holders, government agencies at the federal, state and local levels, insurance companies and investment bankers. Additionally, he has an excellent working knowledge of the bankruptcy process and has served as court-appointed receiver for three different companies. He has also developed and implemented orderly liquidations of both company divisions and entire companies.
His functional experience includes viability analyses, business plan assessments, detailed cash-flow modeling and forecasting, out-of-court vendor management and restructuring, forbearance agreement negotiations, accounts receivable management and organizational restructuring. But even more important is Jim’s ability to lead the turnaround process, working with employees, trade creditors, secured and unsecured lenders, customers and equity holders. His most rewarding experience is to receive a holiday greeting card from a former client with a note “We wouldn’t be here had it not been for you”.
Jim graduated magna cum laude from Bucknell University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He received his MBA, with distinction, from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Business in 1972. He is a past director of the Association of Certified Turnaround Professionals and is currently active in the Portland, Maine and Boston chapters of the TMA. Jim is also a member of ACG and ABI. He and his wife live on the mid-coast of Maine, where he is active in his church, hosts a weekly radio classic jazz show and hikes in Acadia National Park. His daughter is a pediatric critical care nurse practitioner.
