Professional Spotlight: Matt Dossey
What has your experience with Aurora been like since joining?
Having previously worked in client service at a Big 4 public accounting firm, I joined Aurora new to the turnaround and restructuring industry, but excited for the opportunities that lie ahead. Over the course of my time here, I have thoroughly enjoyed the advisory and crisis management aspects of my role and have been fortunate enough to work with an array of organizations in a variety of different industries.
As Aurora continues to grow and expand our presence, I’ve enjoyed the ability to grow our presence in the Atlanta market place.
What do you like most about Aurora?
Having the ability to work with a Senior Management Team that amasses over 40 years of industry experience has been the greatest benefit of working here thus far. The team has provided me with unique opportunities to think creatively and strategically about a complex and company-specific issues while meaningfully addressing client needs. Additionally, the team promotes a culture which helps me grow professionally in a fast-paced timeline, providing me with a successful path ahead for my future.
How did you get involved within this Industry?
As before, I have worked in the client service industry since I started my professional career. The relationships and contacts that I built during my time at a Big 4 accounting firm in Atlanta led to an exciting opportunity with Aurora. After meeting with the firm’s senior management team, I realized that Aurora and the turnaround and restructuring industry was going to provide me with new experiences and help me grow professionally.
What have been some of your more important or gratifying engagements?
My most gratifying engagements thus far involved helping clients work through successful out-of-court restructurings that, in turn, put those companies in a position for future long-term success. During many of these engagements, Aurora served as Chief Restructuring Officer (CRO) and held interim management roles. These roles allowed me to think strategically and work through complex issues within a diverse set of industries. Gaining experiencing within both the operational and financial reporting and accounting functions has given me the ability to grow professionally and allows me to bring that knowledge and experience to my current and future clients.
For Someone starting out in the industry, what advice would you give?
The best advice I can give someone entering this industry is to take the positives and negatives from each of client service engagements and build on those experiences as your career progresses. The success stories will be rewarding and worthwhile.
That said, from time to time, you will face engagements that do not succeed as much as you had hoped for. Take this in stride and understand that your team did all in their power to revive and support the business. You will find reassurance and grow tremendously from those experiences.
What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
I am an avid sports fan and enjoy following my alma mater, the University of Florida. My family has held football tickets my entire life and I try to attend as many games as possible. When the Gators are not playing, I enjoy spending time on the golf course and connecting with my friends and family.
